The 3 to 4 day trek climbs through forest where you may see buffalo, giraffe and monkeys, then follows a dramatic crater rim to Socialist Peak. Longer routes with better acclimatisation, such as Lemosho (7 to 8 days) and Machame (6 to 7 days), generally give higher summit success than the shorter Marangu route.
Yes. Mount Meru (4,562 m) in Arusha National Park is a 3 to 4 day climb that is a good acclimatisation trek before Kilimanjaro, and it passes through wildlife areas with an armed ranger.
Meru is steeper than most Kilimanjaro routes and the final ridge to the summit is narrow, but it needs no technical climbing skills. Good fitness and a steady pace are enough.
