You do not need to be an athlete to climb Kilimanjaro, but you do need to be comfortable walking for 6 to 8 hours a day for several days in a row. Start about 12 weeks before your trip.
| Weeks | Focus | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 – 4 | Build a base | 3 to 4 cardio sessions a week (walking, cycling, swimming) and one longer walk |
| 5 – 8 | Add hills and weight | Weekend hikes of 3 to 5 hours with a daypack, stair or incline work, leg strength |
| 9 – 11 | Peak | Back-to-back long hikes on weekends, wearing your boots and pack |
| 12 | Taper | Lighter activity, rest, check gear, sleep well |
