Safari Packing List: What to Bring and What to Leave Home

Sarah Kimani 1 min read

After guiding over 500 safaris, we've seen every packing mistake imaginable. Here is what actually matters.

Clothing

Neutral colours only — khaki, olive, beige and tan. Avoid bright colours and white. Layers are essential: mornings can be cold, afternoons hot. A good fleece and lightweight windproof jacket are non-negotiable.

Optics

Binoculars (8x42 or 10x42) are arguably more important than your camera. Spend well here. A 100-400mm lens transforms your wildlife photography.

Health Essentials

Malaria prophylaxis, insect repellent (DEET 50%+), high-SPF sunscreen, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications. Consult your doctor 6 weeks before departure.

Leave at Home

Formal wear, heavy books, excessive shoes, and — please — anything camouflage patterned (restricted in many parks).
