Accommodation Guide for Your Tanzania Safari: What to Expect and How to Choose the Right Stay
Choosing the right accommodation is an important part of planning a Tanzania safari. After a long day of wildlife viewing, having a comfortable place to relax, enjoy a good meal, and prepare for the next adventure can make a big difference to your overall experience.
At Jambo Masai Tours, we carefully select accommodations based on location, comfort, service, cleanliness, safety, and feedback from our previous guests. Here is everything you need to know before your safari.
1. What Types of Accommodation Are Available?
Tanzania offers a wide range of safari accommodation, from comfortable campsites to luxury lodges. The right choice depends on your budget, travel style, and the experience you want.
Safari Lodges
Safari lodges are a popular choice for travelers looking for comfort and convenience. They usually offer private rooms, en-suite bathrooms, restaurants, lounges, and sometimes swimming pools.
Lodges are especially suitable for travelers who prefer to relax in comfort after a full day of game drives.
Tented Camps
Tented camps offer a wonderful balance between comfort and being close to nature. Although they are called “tents,” many have proper beds, private bathrooms, electricity, dining areas, and other hotel-style facilities.
Staying in a tented camp can give you a more authentic safari atmosphere while still providing excellent comfort.
Camping
For travelers looking for a more affordable and adventurous experience, public or designated campsites can be an excellent option. Camping allows you to experience the sounds and atmosphere of the African wilderness more closely.
Our camping options can include tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, dining arrangements, and a safari chef depending on the package.
2. Why Location Matters
Accommodation location can have a significant impact on your safari experience.
For example, staying inside Serengeti National Park means you are already within the wildlife area when you wake up. This can allow you to begin your game drive early without first spending a long time driving from outside the park.
This is particularly valuable for travelers who want to maximize their time exploring the Serengeti.
3. What Is Usually Included?
Depending on the accommodation and safari package, your stay may include:
- Comfortable accommodation
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- Drinking water
- Electricity
- Private or shared bathroom facilities
- Restaurant or dining area
- Wi-Fi in selected properties
- Swimming pool at selected lodges
- Laundry services at an additional cost
We always recommend checking the specific inclusions of your safari package before traveling.
4. Pre- and Post-Safari Accommodation
If your international flight arrives before your safari begins, we often recommend spending a night in Arusha before starting the safari.
This gives you time to rest after your journey and begin your safari the following morning without unnecessary pressure.
Similarly, depending on your departure flight, a post-safari night can provide extra comfort and flexibility, especially if your safari finishes several hours before your international flight.
5. Accommodation Inside the National Parks
One of the biggest advantages of staying inside a national park is convenience.
Instead of leaving the park at the end of the day and driving outside the conservation area, you can stay closer to the wildlife areas.
This can mean:
More time in the park → Less unnecessary driving → More opportunities for wildlife viewing.
For this reason, we sometimes recommend paying slightly more for accommodation inside Serengeti when the budget allows.
6. What About Meals?
Most safari accommodations provide full-board meals when included in your safari package.
Breakfast is usually served before or around the start of the morning game drive, while lunch may be served at the lodge or enjoyed as a packed lunch during the safari.
Dinner is normally served after returning from the afternoon game drive.
If you have dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, halal, or gluten-free meals, please inform us in advance so we can coordinate with the accommodation.
7. What If Your Accommodation Changes?
Sometimes, circumstances outside the tour operator’s control can require an accommodation change. For example, a property may experience maintenance issues, renovations, or operational problems.
If this happens, our priority is to find an alternative accommodation with a similar standard, location, comfort, and service quality.
We understand that accommodation changes can be disappointing, which is why we communicate such changes as soon as possible and carefully select alternatives based on reliability and guest feedback.
8. How We Select Accommodation for Our Clients
At Jambo Masai Tours, we don't select accommodation based only on price.
We consider:
- Location – How convenient is it for the safari route?
- Comfort – Are the rooms and facilities suitable?
- Cleanliness – Is the property well maintained?
- Food – What do previous guests say about the meals?
- Service – Is the staff friendly and professional?
- Guest feedback – What experiences have previous travelers shared?
- Value for money – Does the accommodation match the safari package?
Our goal is to ensure that your accommodation complements your safari rather than simply being a place to sleep.
9. How Much Should You Spend on Accommodation?
There is no single answer because every traveler has different priorities.
If your main goal is to maximize your safari while keeping costs manageable, a comfortable mid-range lodge or tented camp can offer excellent value.
If comfort and premium service are your priority, luxury lodges and luxury tented camps provide a more exclusive experience.
For travelers with a tighter budget, camping can significantly reduce accommodation costs while still allowing you to enjoy Tanzania’s incredible wildlife.
10. Our Recommendation
If you are planning your first Tanzania safari, we recommend choosing accommodation based on the overall safari experience rather than simply selecting the cheapest option.
Sometimes spending a little more for accommodation in a strategic location, especially inside Serengeti, can give you more time for game drives and a more relaxed journey.
At Jambo Masai Tours, we are happy to recommend accommodation according to your budget, travel dates, preferred comfort level, and safari route.
Ready to Plan Your Tanzania Safari?
Your accommodation should be an important part of your safari planning, not an afterthought. Whether you prefer a comfortable lodge, authentic tented camp, or adventurous camping experience, we can help you find an option that matches your expectations.
